There’s always been a small but dedicated Japanese music scene active in London and the latest outfit to emerge from that scene is a collaboration between Shin Nishimura and Dobly titled The New Markets.
Hide Uno has been a regular character on the London Japanese music scene for a number of years, notably as part of indie rock duo Dobly, and has managed to keep himself busy with a variety of associations with other bands over the years in the role of drummer.
Now he’s teamed up with notable Japanese DJ and producer Shin Nishimura along with the enigmatically named Mr Arrow to form The New Markets. Their sound embraces laid-back guitar tunes augmented by electro beats and seems to be a logical progression from the material Hide was performing as part of Dobly.
Shin Nishimura has carved out a career as a DJ (notably from running his own PLUS parties) and has taken part in many of the popular techno events in Tokyo, including sharing billing with Ken Ishii. Shin also contributed to a Ghost In The Shell tribute album. Shin has released his 4th album, toured around 12 different countries and produced over 200 tracks, some of which have been played by the likes of Dubfire, John Digweed, Tiest, Carl Cox and Chris Liebing.
Apparently Hide and Shin also went to school together in Newmarket, which seems as good a choice as any to pick a band name!
If you’re keen to check out The New Markets then they have their debut gig in London this Friday at Inigo. Update: Friday’s gig is cancelled and the new date is Saturday 27th October at Mother Live, 333 Old Street. Band on at 8pm. £5 entry. Details on the link!
